Chapter 11: Uproar
The Moon Hall came apart.
Half the Court was shouting. The other half had their phones out, filming the screen.
The press in the gallery were leaning so far over the rail that one of them lost his hat.
The photos kept changing on the wall behind them.
The round window. The silver. The shape of us.
I stood on the dais in a blue silk dress the whole country was watching me in, and I couldn't feel my hands.
"Turn it off," the King roared.
His voice shook the glass in the roof.
Nobody touched it.
Leander was off the edge of the dais in one step, heading for the gallery stairs and the screen.
Sybil tapped her phone. The wall went dark.
"There," she said. "No need to break anything, darling."
She struck the staff on the stone three times.
The noise dropped, slowly.
"The law is plain," she said. "A claimed mate may refuse the bond. A mate who has already taken the bond to her bed has not refused it. She has only changed her mind."
"That's not the law," the King said. "That's you."
"Then let the Council say so." She turned to the room. "Until the Alphas vote at the November moon, the refusal is void, the bond stands, and the King's wedding is suspended."
My mother made a small sound.
I watched her look down at her hand.
She twisted the ring off again, slowly, and pressed it into the King's palm.
"Keep it till November," she said. "Keep it safe."
He closed his fist around it.
That was when the voice came from the front row.
"That's what you get."
