Chapter 15: The Old Fire Hall
Leander looked at his father for a long time.
Then he nodded once, and went out the back door into the dark without a word.
Through the kitchen window I watched him walk down to the end of the dock and sit there.
The King watched too.
"Should somebody go?" Rupert said.
"No," the King said. "Let him have the lake."
The next morning I went to my captain and gave him two weeks' notice.
He didn't look miserable this time.
He looked like he'd been waiting for it.
"Who's going to run your station?" he said.
"Me. My mother. A prince with a lanyard."
"Who's driving?"
My partner put his head round the door.
"Me, on my days off," he said. "For free. Don't tell my wife it's for free."
The old fire hall on the Enumclaw road was a brick box from the fifties.
It had two tall red bay doors and a hose tower on one end.
It smelled of pigeons and old diesel.
The yacht money bought it in a day.
It bought a retired county ambulance at auction, white and boxy.
It had a hundred and ninety thousand miles on it and a heater that only blew hot.
