Chapter 7: The Wrong Wrist

Carmine was in the kitchen in a T-shirt, making coffee with his back to me, when I laid the photograph on the counter.

"Who brought this?"

He turned and looked at it.

His face did what it had done in 1412, a flat gray emptying.

"I don't know."

"Someone walked into your building."

"Someone is going to wish they hadn't." He took out his phone.

"Wait."

I had stopped listening to him, because I was looking at the print.

The print was larger than the one on my phone, and sharper.

I had stared at that picture for five years, in my head, in the dark.

I had never looked at the watch.

The watch was on his right wrist.

I looked at Carmine's wrist.

The same steel watch sat on his left, where it had been every day of our marriage.

"Cassie?"

"Show me your hand."

"What?"

"Your hands, Carmine. Hold them out."

He set the phone down and held them out, palms up.

The watch gleamed on his left wrist.

I put the photograph next to them.

I counted off the evidence, because I couldn't breathe.

"You wear your watch on the left. The man in the bed wears his on the right."

He said nothing.

"The ring is on his left hand, and the watch is on the other arm. That is a left-hander, Carmine. You're not a left-hander."
