Chapter 32: The Sign Comes Down
Gordie was standing on a stepladder in front of the Board when we walked into the Anchor Light at noon on Wednesday.
He had a rag in one hand and a piece of chalk in the other.
The whole bar was there, the Friday table in the middle of a working day.
All twelve of them sat on stools and at the pool table, and every face turned to us.
Nobody said anything.
Paulie stood at the foot of the ladder in her school lanyard with a stack of ungraded science quizzes under her arm.
"Is it true?" she said.
"It's true," I said.
"You got on the bus."
"He got on the bus."
"I got on the bus," Eben said.
Somebody whooped.
The petty officer put two fingers in her mouth and whistled, and the Hannaford manager threw a bar napkin in the air.
My cousin from the Thanksgiving table, who had somehow been invited, burst into tears.
Paulie reached up with both arms and crushed us together.
"I've been up since four," she said, in my ear. "I called the bus company. I called the state police. I almost called your mother."
