Chapter 36: The Wedding
Paulie walked down the aisle of the Owls Head Grange hall at four o'clock on a Sunday afternoon in her mother's wedding dress.
She did not cry until she was halfway there.
I was the first to see it.
I stood at the front in a sage-green dress, holding a bouquet of beach roses, and watched my best friend come toward me with her chin up and her eyes streaming.
Eighty-two folding chairs and a crowd along the walls held two hundred people.
The doors stood open to the bay, and a long gold light poured over the aisle.
Gordie stood at the end of it in a gray suit with his beard trimmed, shaking so hard that the judge had to put a hand on his arm.
"Easy, son," the judge said.
"I'm easy."
"You're a ship in a gale," the judge said.
"I'm a groom."
Beside him, a step to his left, stood Eben.
He wore a gray suit and a white shirt and a pale green tie that matched my dress, and he wasn't looking at the bride.
He was looking at me.
I felt it on my face like the sun.
I looked back.
Behind us, at the front, Linwood sat in the first pew in a bow tie, next to my mother, who wore a hat the size of a dinner plate.
My mother caught my eye and mouthed something that looked like, Behave.
