Chapter 6: On the Mess Hall Floor
Russell found him at breakfast, in the mess hall, with forty people watching.
He walked in with his jacket zipped to the chin and his eyes red from the road.
He did not sit.
"Outside," Russell said. "We'll do this outside."
"We'll do it here," Nolan said, and went on eating his eggs.
The talk at the other tables thinned out and stopped.
Joan stood by the coffee urn with a rag in her hand.
Lydia had come in behind Russell and stopped at the door.
"Harold wants you home," Russell said. "Today. I booked the seats. He'll put you back on Deep Field and he'll put your name on the paper."
"As what?"
"As lead analyst."
"Did he write that down?"
Russell's jaw worked.
"He said it to me."
"Then he can say it to a lawyer."
"You don't get it." Russell leaned on the table with both fists. "He signed my facilities contract last spring. He's the only reason I'm not on the street. You walk out of there, and who do you think he takes it out on?"
"Not me."
"On me!"
"I know," Nolan said. "I'm sorry for that. I'm not coming back for it."
He meant it.
Russell had been the one who taught him to ride a bike.
He had also been the one who stayed home when their father died, and who made sure Nolan's tuition got paid.
None of that moved Nolan, because none of it was what this was about.
"You ungrateful," Russell said, and he grabbed the front of Nolan's shirt with both hands and pulled.
Nolan was off the bench before he knew he'd stood.
