Chapter 14: Read It

Malcolm's POV

Lena had read the message before I did.

She was still sitting on the bench with her legs on either side of me, and her eyes went from the screen to my face.

"Who is that?" she said.

"It's the app."

"It texts you from a number?"

"It texts me when it wants to."

"And it knows I'm holding you by the shirt."

She let go of my shirt.

I picked up the phone and held it in both hands.

All summer the number had told me what to do, and it had been right every time.

It was telling me what to do now, and I wanted to throw the phone across the lab.

"I lied to you outside," I said.

"I know."

"You know?"

"You said no in a half second. Nobody who's telling the truth is that fast." She slid down off the bench. "Give it to me."

"Lena, wait. Let me explain it first."

"No. The thing says to ask me, so I'm asking. Give it."

I put the phone in her hand.

She sat back on her stool and started to scroll.

I stood there with my hands open and nothing in them.

She read for a long time.

She read the four texts from the morning of the exam. She read the one about the three flights. She read the airport answers, and her mouth went tight at the one that said: Let her.

Then she scrolled up past a gap of weeks, and stopped.
