Chapter 17: What Lena Knew
"Darling," Lena said, "she's confusing you. That's what she does."
It came out of her mouth, warm and slow.
Tom did not move.
"Did you know?" he said.
"Tom, we talked about this..."
"Did you phone that hospital, Lena?"
Her lawyer put a hand on her arm, and she shook it off.
Eleven directors watched her think.
I had spent seven years watching that face decide things, and I had never seen it take this long.
"Yes," Lena said.
The word dropped into the room.
"Yes, I called," she said, and her voice rose, and it was not a lullaby anymore. "And what would you have done?"
"Lena," said her lawyer.
"Tell me, Tom, what would you have done? You'd have flown down there with a bouquet and cried on her bed."
"She'd have said it was the shock, and you'd have said you were sorry, and she'd have taken you home."
Spit had gathered at the corner of her mouth.
I had never seen her raise her voice, not at a wedding, not at a funeral, not once in seven years.
