Chapter 16: Number Nine

Willa's POV

Pia stood up off the ice, brushed her coat, and picked up the paper.

"I'll tell the Hall the Alpha went for his pregnant Luna in the dark," she said. "There's a camera over the faceoff circle, and it saw you take your clothes off at a run, Rhys. Good night."

She walked out through the gap in the boards on her own two feet, and neither of us stopped her.

I had said not like this.

I still meant it, and it tasted like ash.

Rhys was on his knees on the ice with my coat around his shoulders, shaking.

The change always leaves a wolf cold, and his had been a hard one.

"Up," I said. "Come on."

"Willa, I almost."

"I know. Up."

I got his arm over my shoulders and walked him down the corridor to the Northmen's locker room.

The lights came on when I hit the switch.

Twenty stalls ran along the walls, each with a jersey on a hook, and his was in the corner, number nine.

I sat him down on the bench in front of it and went to the training room for towels.

When I came back, he hadn't moved.

His hands hung between his knees, and they were shaking.

"I wanted to kill her," he said. "I wanted it so much I couldn't hear you."

"You heard me."

"Barely."

"You stopped," I said. "That's the part I'm keeping."

I set the towels down and stood in front of him.

He looked up, and his gray eyes were wide and raw.

"I need to say what I want from you," I said. "Before anything else."

"Tell me."

"First, you don't decide anything about Emil without me. Not the pack, not the Hall, not the seat. Second, when you're angry, you come to me before you go to anyone's throat. Third, you earn this in public. Every day. Where they can see."

"Yes."

"You didn't even think about it."
