Chapter 23: The Claim
I said yes on the ice, with my son in my arms and eighteen thousand people on their feet.
Rhys never got the ring out of his pocket.
He was too busy being tackled by a five-year-old.
Hours later, the moon was high and white over the ridge, and Hattie had taken Emil to the guest room with a cup of warm milk and orders not to come out for any reason short of fire.
The Alpha house was quiet.
Rhys led me upstairs to a room I had never seen, at the back of the house, with one tall window over the lake.
The curtains were open.
Moonlight lay across the bed and across the floor.
"This was never hers," he said. "She never came in here."
"Good."
"I want you to know that before anything else."
"I know it."
He shut the door.
I turned to face him in the silver light, and my heart was beating hard.
"There's a thing I want," I said.
"Tell me."
"You promised you'd never bite me unless I asked."
His eyes went gold at the rims, and his hands curled slowly into fists at his sides.
"Willa."
"I'm asking."
"You don't have to."
"I know I don't have to. That's why it counts."
I crossed the room and put my hands flat on his chest, over his heart.
"I'm not claiming you because the law says so, or because a pack is watching," I said. "I'm choosing."
"Willa."
"Nobody gets to hand you a woman in the dark again. This time you get the one who picked you."
He made a rough sound.
"But first," I said, "lie down."
He went down on the bed without a word.
I stood over him, and I took my time.
I pulled my sweater off, and my jeans, and let them drop, and the cold air touched my skin.
His gaze moved over me slowly, hungry and wet and holding nothing back.
