Chapter 6: Harvest Moon Gala

"He's asleep," I said. "He doesn't know what he said."

Rhys didn't move his hand from under Emil's head.

"He said it," Rhys said, very low.

"Rule one."

"I haven't said a word."

He drew his hand out slowly and shut the car door without a sound.

He didn't say anything else, and neither did I.

Two nights later, the pack gathered at the Alpha house for the Harvest Moon gala, and I went in a borrowed green dress.

Hattie had zipped me into it herself, with pins in her mouth.

"It's from 1994," she said around them. "It was very good at the time."

"Come with me."

"I'd embarrass myself, and then I'd embarrass you. I'll stay with the boy."

I wanted the pack to see me in the same room as Pia.

I wanted the check settled out loud, where nobody could pretend they hadn't heard.

Bram drove me up the ridge in the dark.

The Alpha house had every window lit, and wolves in dark suits and silk dresses stood in knots across the great room.

Rhys stood by the fireplace with his father, the old Alpha, a gray and heavy man with the same eyes as his son.

Rhys saw me come in, and the conversation around him stopped.

I walked across the room with my chin up, and the whole pack watched.

Pia saw me too.

She tapped her glass with a spoon, and the room fell quiet.

"I want to say something," she said, with her lashes wet. "Everyone knows Willa is back, and I'm so glad."

There was a murmur of agreement.

"But I've held something for six years, and it wasn't fair to any of you." She took a breath. "The night of the rite, Willa took a check from Rhys's father and left. I never wanted to say it. I only want everyone to understand why we stopped looking for her."
