Chapter 18: In the Way

"Promised you?" Garrick said.

His voice was thin and cracked, and the whole hall heard it.

"I never promised you any strength. I didn't know it was hers to give."

"You told me I'd be Luna."

"I told you the pack would accept you in time."

"You said it every night!" Calla's face twisted. "You said it in her own bed, with her asleep, that you'd have chosen me if the Moon hadn't put her in your way!"

A hiss went round the benches.

Garrick shut his eyes.

Wynne had known it, in her bones, for years.

It was still different to hear it said aloud in front of three packs.

She stepped out from the witnesses' wall and walked to the middle of the floor.

"Calla."

"Don't you speak to me."

"One question. Then I'll sit."

The western Alpha lifted a finger, and the hall went still.

"You swim the cove at dawn every day of the summer," Wynne said. "A mile out and a mile back. You told me so at my wedding, and you were proud of it."

"So?"

"On the day my son died, you needed Garrick to pull you out of the water."

"There was a current."

"There was a patrol on the border line," said Bram's beta from the wall. "I saw you standing, ma'am. You stood up to your waist and you waved."

"I was waving for help!"

"Smiling, you were."

Calla's head swung toward him.

"You're a Saltmarsh liar."

"He is a sworn witness," said the western Alpha.
