Chapter 21: Five Hands

The Saltmarsh council met in a low stone hall above the harbour, and Wynne crossed the bay to it alone.

She went in without knocking.

Five elders sat at a long table, and Bram stood in front of it with his hands behind his back, in the place where the accused stand.

He heard the door and turned his head.

His whole face changed.

"This is a closed hearing," said the eldest of the five, a thin old woman with a stick across her knees. "You're not a Saltmarsh wolf."

"I'm the Alpha of Ashfall."

"Then you have no seat here."

"I have a right to speak for my own treaty," Wynne said. "Your law gives it to me. I looked it up on the ferry."

A man at the end of the table coughed to hide a smile.

The old woman waved her stick.

"Speak. Be short."

Wynne walked to the front and stood beside Bram, not touching him.

"Your Alpha is charged with breaking the treaty on the day my son died," she said. "The breach was not Bram's. Ashfall's Alpha never called for Bram, and that Alpha was in the water for a woman who wanted my son out of the way. Ashfall has said so before three packs. Its elders have cut that Alpha's name from the wall."

"We've heard," said the old woman.

"Then hear the rest. Your Alpha had every reason to keep quiet, and he told me the truth about that day anyway. I hit him for it, and he let me."

"Wynne," Bram said, low.
