Chapter 5: What He Saw From the Headland
On the third night Wynne went down the shore path to the guest house alone.
It was raining, a thin cold rain off the bay.
She had left the crutch behind and strapped the leg tight, and every step cost her.
Hester had said she was a fool and had walked her to the end of the garden anyway.
Bram opened the door before she knocked.
He had been waiting, and it showed.
A fire burned low in the grate, and a kettle sat on the hob.
He put a blanket around her shoulders without asking and pushed a chair toward the fire.
"Sit," he said. "Please."
She sat.
"Tell me."
Bram stayed on his feet.
"My patrol was walking the headland. We do it every Thursday, on our own side of the line." He kept his eyes on the fire. "It was a clear day. Your son was on the sand with a little wooden wolf, making it run along the tideline."
Wynne's hand closed on the blanket.
"The Alpha was with him. Calla Greaves was in the water thirty yards out, up to her waist."
"She'd gone in to cool her knee."
"She was waving."
Wynne looked up.
"She wasn't swimming. She wasn't struggling. She stood in the surf with one arm in the air and called for him. The wind brought it up the cliff." Bram's voice flattened. "Your mate went in after her at a run."
"And Eli?"
"Stayed where he was. Alone, on the sand, with the tide coming in."
Wynne did not move.
"A wave came over the shelf. A big one, the kind that comes once an hour." He swallowed. "It took him off the beach before the Alpha was half way to her."
