Chapter 10: The Porch

Jubal's POV

I got up at five on Sunday because I still could not sleep.

Shyla was a warm shape against my side, and Tobe was a bigger one against hers, and the three of us had barely fit in my bed.

I lay there and listened to her breathe for a while, and then I gave up and went down to feed the boarders.

I buttoned my cuffs before I went.

I do it without thinking.

The clinic was dark and smelled of disinfectant and wet dog.

There were three boarders this week: a beagle with a bad hip, a pair of Pyrenees puppies and a goat named Reverend.

The goat looked at me with a flat yellow eye and said what he thought of my schedule.

"I know," I said. "I've been busy."

I fed them all and did the water, and I took the trash out front to the can by the porch.

Then I stopped, with the bag in my hand.

The porch was full.

Somebody had stacked it up in the night, quietly, and stacked it with care.

There was a saddle on the rail, a good one, with the stirrup leathers rolled and tied.
