Chapter 15: The Step

Tobe's POV

She opened the door at first light, and I did not get to the end of my sentence.

I had it ready.

I had been working on it since Sunday, on that step, with a quilt around my shoulders and my breath smoking.

"I phoned the old Beta at midnight," I said. "I gave back the Warden's post."

"In front of the whole pack, on the call-tree," I said. "So nobody could say after that I'd been..."

Shyla took a fistful of my coat and pulled me over the sill.

I am six-four and weigh two thirty, and she moved me where she wanted me.

The door shut behind me, and she put me up against it.

"You what?" she said.

"Resigned."

"For me?"

"For me," I said. "I couldn't sit at his table and call it duty. It was never duty."

She looked at my mouth, and then at my eyes, and I saw the anger still sitting in her.

I would not have wanted it gone.

"I'm still angry at you," she said.

"Good."

"Don't you tell me good."

She kissed me, hard and sudden, and her teeth caught my lower lip and bit down.

It hurt, and it was the best thing that had happened to me in three days.

I put my hands in her hair and she shoved my coat off my shoulders and let it drop.

My shirt came next, and the buttons skittered across the plank floor.

"I'm not done being angry," she said against my jaw.

"Don't be done."

Her hands went under my undershirt and over my ribs, hot, and she dragged her nails down my belly.

I made a noise I had not meant to make.

She heard it and did it again.

I got her sweater over her head, and her braid fell down her bare back.

I took the braid in one fist and kissed her neck.

She tasted like woodsmoke and coffee.

I got to my knees on the cabin floor in front of the stove, and I took her left wrist in my hands.

The forge scar ran across it, a rough white line from a hot shoe when she was sixteen.

I had watched that scar for eleven years on every horse she shod, and I had never touched it.
