Chapter 3: Jubal Talks

In the iron bed Jubal talks the whole time, tells her he has known the sound of her truck for eight years and takes her twice; out on the porch the Warden listens and does not come in, and headlights climb the lane.

Jubal had me against the door before it was all the way shut.

"Tobe says I'm to come in here and do exactly what you tell me," he said into my mouth.

"Tobe said that?"

"Tobe said a few words, and I filled in the rest."

I laughed, and he swallowed it, and then neither of us was laughing.

His kiss was nothing like Tobe's.

Tobe had kissed me hungry.

Jubal kissed me slowly, with his tongue in no hurry, and he sighed when I bit his lip.

He cupped my face in both hands and tipped it up.

"I've had a speech ready for eight years," he said. "I was going to be so smooth."

"Go ahead."

"I've forgotten every word, Shy."

I had pulled my jeans back on and nothing else, and he was in all his clothes, and I could feel every button of his shirt against my bare skin.

I started undoing them from the top.

His chest was lean and freckled all the way down, and his heart was going hard against my palm.

I got to his sleeves and pushed one cuff up his forearm.

He caught my hand and set it flat on his ribs.

"Leave those," he said lightly. "They're ugly. I've had them forever."

"They're a forearm, Jubal."

"They're a very sad forearm. Come here."

He kissed me again, and I let it go.

He drew his shirt off one-handed, cuffs and all, and threw it at the stove.

On his left wrist he wore a wide leather watchband, and that stayed on.

Then he turned me and walked me backward to the iron bed.

The mattress was my father's, and it dipped under us and smelled of cedar.

I lay back, and Jubal knelt over me with his red-brown hair falling in his eyes.

He undid my jeans and drew them down my legs, slowly, and he kissed the inside of my knee on the way.

"You've got a scar here," he said.

"A mare kicked me. I was fifteen."

"I treated that mare," Jubal said.

"You did not."

"I treated that mare for the next six years," Jubal said. "Because it was an excuse to be on your daddy's place."

I looked at him, and he looked back with no joke on his face at all.

Then he put his mouth on my breast.

He was so gentle about it that I arched into him, and he sucked harder, and I gasped.

His hand slid down my belly and between my legs.

He found me soaked, and he said a word that made me blush all the way down.

"That's for Tobe," he said. "I can tell."

"Don't talk about him."

"I'm not. I'm thanking him."

Two fingers slid inside me, easy and curved, and his thumb found my clit.

I made a sound I had not made in years.

"Look at you," Jubal said, low. "You're so wet for me, Shy. You're so good."

He kept up a murmur against my skin, a nonsense stream of praise and filth and my name.

It should have been too much, and it was exactly right.

I came on his hand within minutes, with my fingers knotted in his hair.

"Again?" he said.

"Not on your hand."

"Yes, ma'am," Jubal said, soft, and shucked his jeans.

He was long and lean and flushed, and I wanted him so much I could not hold still.

He settled between my thighs, and he rested his forehead on mine.

"Too much?" he said. "Say so. I'll stop."

"If you stop I'll kill you."

He grinned, wide and wicked, and pushed in.

He went slowly, a little at a time, and I felt every inch of him open me.

I cried out when he was fully inside, and he held there with his whole body trembling.

"God," he said. "Shyla."

"Move."

He moved.

His hips rolled long and deep, and he kept his eyes open and on mine.

I got my legs around his waist and my heels in the small of his back.

"There you are," he said, breathless. "There you are. I've wanted to see your face do this since you were nineteen."

"Don't say nineteen."

"Twenty," he said. "Twenty-one. I'm bad at math."

I laughed under him, and the laugh turned into a moan when he changed his angle.

He hit something deep inside me, and I dug my nails into his shoulders.

"Right there," I said. "Do that again."

He did that again.

He did it over and over, steady and heavy, and the iron bed began to knock against the wall.

"Louder," Jubal whispered in my ear. "Let him hear."

"Jubal."

"He's on the porch. He's guarding. Let him hear what he's guarding."

It was filthy, and I was beyond blushing.

I cried out, loud, with my head thrown back, and out on the porch a board creaked.

I knew then that Tobe was sitting against the wall just outside, hearing every sound I made, and that he would not come in.

That did something to me I would think about for a long time.

"Roll over," I said.

Jubal blinked at me.

"On your back," I said. "I'm taking it."

"Yes, ma'am."

He rolled, and I came up over him and sank down in one slow stroke.

He groaned and his head went back on the pillow.

I braced my hands on his chest and rocked, and he put his hands on my hips and let me set the pace.

It was deeper this way.

I found the angle and ground against him, with my clit pressed to his pelvis, and the pleasure climbed.

"That's it," Jubal said. "God, look at you. Use me. Take what you need."

I took it.

I rode him until my thighs burned and my hair came out of its braid, and I could hear myself saying his name.

"I'm close," I said.

"So am I. Shy, I can't. I can't hold on."

"Don't. Come with me."

I came with my fingers gripping his chest and my body clamped around him, and it broke over me in long hard waves.

Jubal swore and arched under me, and I felt him spill deep inside me, hot and pulsing.

I collapsed on him, and he wrapped both arms around me and held on.

For a long time we lay there with our hearts slamming together.

He kissed my hair, and my temple, and the side of my neck.

"Nobody ever talked to me like that," I said, finally, against his shoulder.

"Like what?"

"Like I wouldn't break."

"You're the strongest person I know," Jubal said. "You shoe a thousand-pound horse with one hand on his foot and an argument in the other."

I laughed, a wet laugh, and I pressed my face to his neck.

He smelled of soap and sweat and the cedar from the mattress.

"I've watched you do it for eight years," he said, quietly, into my hair. "Every ranch on the Buffalo. I know the sound of your truck."

"You know the sound of my truck."

"I knew it from a mile off. I'd find a reason to be in the barn."

I closed my eyes.

Out on the porch, the board creaked again, and I smiled into Jubal's shoulder.

"Tell Tobe he can come in now," I said.

"He won't."

"Why not?"

"Because he's the Warden, and somebody has to be," Jubal said. "He'll sit out there till the sun's up out of pure principle."

"That's stupid."

"It's Tobe. Besides," Jubal said, and rolled his hips slowly against mine, "I'm not done with you."

I felt him already hard again inside me.

"Wolves," I said, stunned.

"Wolves," he agreed happily.

He eased out of me and turned me on my side with my back to his chest.

He fitted himself along me, one arm under my head and the other around my waist.

I felt the blunt heat of him nudge between my thighs from behind, and I reached back and guided him in.

We both groaned.

It was slower this way, and closer, and there was nowhere for either of us to hide.

His mouth was at my ear, and his hand slid down my belly and found my clit.

"You asked for twice, back there," he said, a little hoarse. "I heard it through the wall. Tobe's a lucky man."

"You're not getting twice. You're getting three."

"I'll take it. I'll take whatever you give me."

He circled his fingers on me while he moved, and each slow thrust pushed me into his touch.

"Tell me what you like," he said. "Tell me, Shy, I want to learn it."

"That," I said. "Just like that. Don't change anything."

"Not a thing."

He nipped my earlobe, and I shuddered all along my back.

The pleasure built more quietly than before, deeper and heavier, and it felt like it was coming from somewhere I had forgotten I had.

I reached back and gripped his hip and pulled him harder into me.

"Come on," he whispered. "Come for me. Let go. I've got you."

I did.

It rolled through me in a long, slow wave, and I turned my face into the pillow and cried out his name.

He followed me with a ragged groan, holding me tight, and then he went still and just breathed.

His arm stayed around my waist, and my hand stayed on his.

We lay there with our breath slowing, the fire low and the creek running outside.

"Hey," Jubal murmured against my neck. "You okay?"

"I'm better than okay."

"You're crying a little."

"I know," I said. "I'm happy. I don't know what to do with it."

"Nothing," he said. "You don't have to do a thing. You just lie there."

Then the porch boards moved, a heavy step, and Tobe's voice came through the door.

"Shyla."

"What?" I said.

"Headlights," Tobe said. "At the bottom of the lane."
