Chapter 14: First Law
I called the pack to the hall at noon on Saturday, and every bench was full before I got there.
I did not sit in the Alpha's chair.
I stood in front of it, in my cleanest flannel, with the thick book of names open on the head table.
Soren sat on the bench at my left hand, where the old law said the hunter sits.
He had asked me that morning whether I wanted him farther back.
I'd said, "Where I can see you."
"Before I say anything," I told the room, "I want to read you something."
I found the page and read it out in my plainest voice.
"'Any wolf the Alpha names a thief or a danger may be put out of Blackfir land, and no wolf shall shelter that wolf.'"
"That's the exile law," I said. "It's forty years old."
"It says nothing about hearing the wolf first."
"It doesn't say the wolf can answer."
"It let a twenty-four-year-old with a pen and a frightened heart end my father."
Nobody coughed.
"Sigrid."
She stood with her cane and her tiny crooked back and held up a folded paper.
