Chapter 8: The Cord

I tied his wrists with a lamb cord.

It was braided grey wool, as long as my arm, the kind we use to hold a ewe still for the shears.

I had taken it off a hook in the cheese cellar and carried it up the tower stairs in my fist.

He saw it when I laid it across his chest.

"Nahia," Unai said.

"Do you know what this is?" I asked.

"I know exactly what it is," he said.

"Then you know it doesn't hurt."

"It's not the cord I'm worried about."

"What are you worried about?" I said.

"That I'll like it," he said.

I laughed, and my voice came out low.

He lay on his back in his own bed, in the firelit top room, with his shirt already gone and his chest rising fast.

I knelt astride his hips with my own shirt open.

"Hands up," I said.

He put them above his head without another word.

I passed the cord twice around his wrists, and drew it through the carved rail at the bedhead, and knotted it.

I used the shepherd's knot every child in Haizpea learns, the one that holds until you pull the right end.

I tested it with two fingers.

"Pull," I said.

He pulled.

The knot held, and the bed creaked, and his whole body flexed under me.

I watched the muscles in his arms stand out.

"Good?" I said.

"God," he said.

"Is that yes?"

"It's yes, Nahia."

"Say you want it," I said.

"I want it," he said. "I want whatever you're going to do."

I bent over him and kissed him, slowly, with my hands flat on his ribs.

He kissed back as hard as the cord would let him, straining up off the pillow.

I drew away and he made a low frustrated sound, and I smiled against his jaw.
