Chapter 4: Say It in My House

Nobody in the square breathed.

Strake bowed his shaved head, and his smile came back before it finished going down.

"A human child showed disrespect to the Alpha of this sector, my King," he said. "The punishment was pack law."

"A six-year-old barked at you," the King said.

"At my pack's Alpha."

"And your law is twenty-nine lashes on his sister."

"She offered herself."

"She offered fifteen," the King said. "You took fourteen more."

Strake did not answer that.

A few of the wolves shifted on their feet.

Every human around me kept their eyes on the ground, but I could hear their breathing speed up.

The King looked at Strake for another moment.

"You will come to the Keep tonight and explain your count to me."

"Of course, my King."

"Alone."

Then he turned back to me.

Up close I could see how tired he was.

There was a shadow under each gray eye, and the hand he had held mine with was clenched at his side.

"Macy Davenport," he said, loud enough for the square. "My car will be at the end of Mill Street at dusk. If you want to say that word to me again, you may say it in my house."

He waited a moment, and when I did not answer, he walked out of the square.

Every wolf bowed again.

The moment his back was gone, Emmett grabbed my arm.

"You said no to the Alpha King," he said. "Out loud. In front of everyone."

"I know."

"Are you out of your mind?"

"Probably."

"Are you going to the car?"

I looked at the stage.

I could still see my own blood in the grain of the planks.

"Yes," I said.

"Macy."

"He counted. He stood there and counted, and he did nothing."

"He did something," Emmett said. "He just did it in front of Strake."
