Chapter 16: The King's Hand
The herald wore dove-grey wool and a very small smile.
"The Seal sits in the Long Hall at noon," she said. "All are summoned, the king among them, if the king is able."
She looked down at the black wolf on the floor behind my knees.
"I see that he is not."
She left before Osmond could close the door on her.
"It's a trap," he said.
"It's a vote," I said. "That's worse."
I washed the blood off my arms in the king's basin and put on a clean shirt.
Then I picked up the shirt Haldane had bled through in the night, stiff and rust-brown and stinking of charcoal.
I took the stoneware jug off the night table in its plastic sleeve.
"Bring the king," I told Osmond.
"He will not walk beside me."
"He'll walk beside me."
He did.
We came down the main stair of the Long Hall at noon.
I carried a stoneware jug in one arm and a bloody shirt in the other, and a huge black wolf pressed against my hip.
Two hundred conversations stopped at once.
I felt them look at him, and then at his white forepaw, and then at me.
