The Alpha Kings Secret Son novel · Chapter 1 of 6
Chapter 1: The Scent of a Secret
Mira survives Roman Voss’s display of alpha authority, chooses to keep her job for Axel’s sake, and learns she will become Roman’s direct financial analyst.
Roman Voss’s eyes turned silver, and every person at the boardroom table stepped back except Mira.
The movement came before anyone understood it. Chairs scraped. A director caught himself against the glass wall. Someone near the coffee service dropped a spoon.
Mira stayed beside the financial reports, one hand closed around the school photograph inside her coat pocket.
Axel’s face pressed against the paper beneath her fingers. Missing front tooth. Blue jumper. Hair refusing every brush she had ever bought.
Her son had been photographed that morning, and Roman Voss had walked into the room before she could put the picture away.
This was too much drama for a job that had promised spreadsheets.
Snow struck the tower windows in thick white sheets. The city had vanished beyond the glass as Roman took one step into the room.
He was taller than the photographs in the company profile. Silver hair swept back from his face, with one loose strand fallen across his forehead. His white shirt sat perfectly beneath a dark suit. A trace of stubble made him look less polished than the room deserved.
His gaze crossed the table and stopped on her.
His nostrils flared.
The room dropped several degrees. Frost gathered along the lower edge of the windows, and white breath formed around every mouth.
Pressure settled over Mira’s shoulders.
A woman across the table stumbled backward. Two men moved with her. The legal director knocked over his chair and left it where it fell.
Mira did not move.
Roman watched her. His face stayed calm, but his attention sharpened.
He had expected her to retreat.
Mira kept her fingers around Axel’s photograph and looked mildly confused. She had spent five years learning how to appear harmless in rooms where people enjoyed deciding what she was worth.
One more room would not ruin the technique.
A man at the far end of the table tried to speak. His lips moved, but the words came out thin and broken.
Roman looked away from Mira. The pressure eased a little, though no one came forward or sat down.
He faced the group with cool displeasure. 'If the meeting is over, say so. I dislike guessing.'
The director nearest him swallowed. 'Your Majesty, we were reviewing the quarterly transfer model.'
'Were you?'
The director glanced at the scattered papers. 'Yes.'
'Then continue.'
No one did.
Roman’s eyes remained silver. The cold still bit at the inside of Mira’s nose.
She lifted the top report. 'The northern division is carrying an unapproved liability adjustment. It changes the forecast by eight percent.'
Every face turned toward her.
The director looked offended, which was a common response to accurate accounting. 'That adjustment was pending authorization.'
'It was entered as completed.' Mira turned the page. 'Those are different things. The system has already moved the loss into this quarter.'
A woman beside the director leaned over the table, her breath clouding before her. 'Who are you?'
'Mira Callaghan. Temporary financial analyst.'
'You joined this morning.'
'Yes. It has been a full morning already.'
The woman stared at her.
Mira gave her a small smile. 'I was hoping for a name badge and a chair. The chair appears to have become political.'
The director did not laugh. A junior analyst at the end of the table made one sharp cough, then looked terrified of himself.
Roman’s attention returned to Mira.
He had watched her since she spoke. His focus made her notice every shift in his face before she could sort through it.
That was inconvenient.
'Your name,' Roman said.
'Mira Callaghan.'
'I heard you.'
'It seemed worth confirming. First days are full of paperwork.'
His expression did not change. 'You are not affected by the pressure.'
The room fell still.
Mira glanced toward the frosted windows. 'I am affected by the temperature. My coat is wool, so I should survive.'
The junior analyst made another strangled sound.
Roman studied her. His eyes stayed silver, but the pressure drew back until people began to breathe normally.
Mira felt the photograph shift beneath her palm.
Axel was safe at school. Ottoline would collect him that afternoon. His clinic enrollment fee was due in six weeks, and Mira’s account was nowhere near the required amount.
She had accepted this job for the salary, the benefits, and the chance at a stable contract.
She had not accepted it to stand ten feet from the man who had vanished before she could tell him what he had left behind.
Roman had been gone before she learned about the pregnancy. Before the birth. Before Axel’s first fever and his first word. Before the night she sat beside his bed with a bowl of cold water and no one to call except Ottoline.
Roman had not known.
Mira had known enough for both of them.
The meeting continued under Roman’s supervision. He asked questions that turned vague answers into exact figures, and every person in the room found a fresh reason to dislike the numbers.
Mira marked three incorrect entries, noted two missing approvals, and wrote down the name of the director who had tried to blame a junior employee for the transfer.
People revealed themselves quickly when they thought the room was too cold for anyone to notice.
Roman noticed.
When the meeting ended, he left without another word. The pressure vanished with him, and movement returned to the boardroom.
Nobody commented on the fact that Mira had stayed standing while everyone else retreated. They did not need to.
Their glances had already entered the record.
In the elevator, Mira pressed the button for the lobby. The doors closed on the white city and the boardroom beyond it.
For the first time that morning, she looked at Axel’s photograph. He was grinning at whoever held the camera, one front tooth missing and his small hand raised in a wave.
Mira had a resignation letter in her satchel. She also had an emergency bag beneath her bed. Rent required planning.
She could leave before Roman learned her name properly.
She could stay.
The clinic across the city had one place left in its specialist speech program. The enrollment fee had to be paid within six weeks, or Axel would be given to the next child on the list.
Mira turned the photograph over and slid it back into her coat pocket.
She would stay.
She would take every paycheck and every useful contact Voss Industries offered her. She would become secure enough that nobody could decide Axel’s future over her head.
Roman could know nothing until she had that security.
Especially Roman.
The elevator opened onto the lobby.
Mira stepped out and nearly collided with a man carrying a stack of folders. She caught the top one before it hit the marble.
'Sorry,' he said. 'First day?'
'Is it showing?' Mira handed it back. 'I was hoping the wool coat suggested competence.'
He glanced at her badge. 'Mira Callaghan?'
'That depends on whether this is good news.'
He was Roman’s assistant. She recognized him from the boardroom, though she had not noticed him stepping back with the others. He held a leather portfolio against his chest and wore the expression of someone delivering a difficult parcel.
'It is an instruction from Mr. Voss,' he said.
Mira glanced at the elevator doors. They had already closed.
The assistant opened the portfolio and removed a single sheet.
'Your temporary placement has been changed,' he said. 'Effective tomorrow, you will be Roman Voss’s direct financial analyst. You will report to him alone.'
