Chapter 16: Day Two
On the second morning Wenzhou woke before Rongan and lay for a long time looking at the ceiling.
He wanted to leave.
It was a plain fact, and he made himself examine it.
He wanted to get up, drive down the mountain, and stand in the middle of Berth Nine with a briefcase.
Zhao's men were counting heads. Every hour counted. He was a man who answered a threat the day it arrived.
He turned his head.
Rongan slept on his side with one big arm thrown over Wenzhou's waist.
His lashes were wet. His breathing was ragged and shallow, and the whole room smelled of him.
Wenzhou stayed where he was.
It was the hardest thing he had done in four years as chairman, and nobody would ever know it.
"Wenzhou."
Rongan's eyes were open. They were glassy with fever, black to the rim.
"Here."
"Hot." Rongan's hand moved restlessly on his hip. "I'm so hot. Everything hurts."
"Where?" said Wenzhou.
"Everywhere. I need..."
"Come with me."
Wenzhou took his hand and led him, naked and stumbling, out through the glass doors and down the wooden steps to the pier.
