Chapter 23: The Mark
"Say it again," said Wenzhou, "with the lamp on."
His voice was not steady.
He sat up on the red quilt, and Rongan sat up with him, naked to the waist, with the light across his scarred shoulders.
"I want you to mark me," Rongan said.
He said it plainly. He had practiced nothing.
"I'm not in heat. Nobody is pushing me."
"I've thought about it for a month, and I know what it is. I want it from you."
His throat worked.
"I want to smell like yours."
Wenzhou took off his glasses.
His hands were shaking so badly that he dropped them on the quilt. He did not pick them up.
"You are certain."
"Yes," said Rongan.
"Once it's done, it's permanent."
"I know. I'd like it to be."
Wenzhou reached out and laid his palm against Rongan's cheek, and Rongan turned his face into it and kissed the heel of his hand.
"Then lie down," said Wenzhou. His voice was unrecognizable. "On your front."
Rongan lay down.
He stretched out on the red quilt with his arms under the pillow, and his big back rose and fell in the lamplight.
Wenzhou knelt over him and kissed the scar on the left shoulder blade, slowly, from one end to the other.
