Chapter 12: The Wrong Kind of Kiss

Delaney did not run.

She stayed on her knees in the road with the wet hem of her dress in her fists, and she began to cry.

It was the best I had ever seen her do it.

"Gideon, please. Please, listen to me."

"Where did you get it?"

"I didn't know!" She lifted her face to him, soaked and shaking. "The healer gave me the recipe. She said it was calming for the Luna's nerves after the funeral. She said it would help her sleep. I only wanted to help."

"The healer."

"I trusted her! I'd never hurt Maeve. I love her, I love both of you."

Gideon stood very still.

I watched him weigh it. I watched him do the one thing I had dreaded.

He wanted to believe her.

His whole body leaned toward it.

He had six years of her warm hands on his shoulders.

Now she offered him a story that turned the whole thing into a mistake.

"The healer," he said again, slowly. "The healer told you this."

"Yes. Yes, I swear on my father's grave."

"That is not true," I said.

He turned.

I was standing at my grandmother's gate with one hand on the rail.

"The healer tested the thermos four days ago. She knew the second she smelled it. She cried over it."

"Four days ago?" His voice cracked. "You knew four days ago?"

"I knew."

"And you didn't tell me."

I looked at him.

"Would you have believed me?"

He opened his mouth to say yes.

I watched it die there.

"I'd have asked Laney," he said hoarsely.

"You'd have asked Laney," I said. "And she'd have cried, and you'd have held her, and I would have been the woman who accused a dead man's daughter of poisoning her."

Delaney whispered, "Maeve, please..."

"You'd have been kind about it. You'd have said I was grieving."

"Maeve." He took a step. His hands shook. "Why didn't you ever tell me you were hurting?"
