Chapter 11: What Rhea Knew

Dawn came gray and cold, and I did not sleep.

Kellan found me on the longhouse step with Lyra, watching the sky go pale over the wall.

"Do you want her brought up?" he asked.

"Yes. In the yard. In front of your pack."

"And Stroud?"

"Let him stay," I said. "He should hear it too."

They led Rhea out of the cellar at sunrise.

Two guards held her by the arms.

Her coat was torn, her red hair was matted, and there was dirt across her cheek.

"You threw a knife at my luna," Kellan said.

"I was provoked."

"You threw a knife at a woman holding a three-hour-old baby on a catwalk."

"She's no one's luna. She's a runaway."

I stepped down into the yard, and she turned her head to follow me.

"I have one question," I said. "You can answer or not."

"I have nothing to say to you."

"Did you know the moonfruit could be split?"

Her eyes flickered.
