Chapter 5: Luna of Ashfall

Ashfall tested me in the first hour.

The morning after the cairn, Kellan took me to the longhouse where the elders sat, and I walked in wearing borrowed jeans and a flannel with the sleeves rolled up.

Eleven gray-haired wolves watched me enter.

None of them stood.

"This is Elora," Kellan said. "She'll be my luna for the year."

"A Stonehollow runaway," said the oldest man, a stooped wolf with a cane and a mean eye. "Pregnant by our enemy's Alpha. Dead, according to our scouts."

"Dead to them," I said. "Not to you."

The old man's eyes narrowed.

"You're bold for a woman we pulled out of a river."

"I'm bold because you've been fighting Stonehollow for forty years and you haven't won," I said. "I walked out of it in a night."

Hester, standing by the wall, coughed into her fist to cover a laugh.

I took a step forward.

"Let me show you what you've got wrong about them."

I pointed at the map on the long table.

Stonehollow held the lower valley and the creek crossings, and Ashfall held the high ground, and between them lay the old logging road that both packs claimed.

"Dorian doesn't take the road in winter," I said. "He leaves it for the first snow, and then he sends six wolves through at dawn, never more. He's done it every year since his father died. I've packed the sandwiches."

The room went silent.
