Chapter 18: The Salt Gathering
The Salt Gathering was held in the old Bostrom Hall on the shore.
Nobody had opened its doors in ten years.
The salt had crept up the walls in white stains, and the long tables stood where my father had left them.
Someone had swept the floor and lit a fire.
Three Alphas sat on the dais under the carved beam where my grandfather's name was cut, and three hundred wolves filled the benches on either side.
I walked in through the middle with Torin at my left and my grandfather at my right, and the hall turned to look at us.
I heard every heart.
I heard the sea through the broken shutters.
It was so loud and so much mine that I almost cried in the doorway.
My father sat at a table to the left of the dais, in his dark suit, with Sunniva beside him in her cream cardigan.
She smiled at me.
She looked warm and tired and entirely trustworthy.
The Alpha in the middle chair was a heavy, grey woman from the pine country.
"We are here to hear a petition by Arne Bostrom, Alpha of the Saltclaw Shore," she said. "He asks the Council to find his daughter unfit to stand on her own, and to place her in the care of her family."
"Arne, speak."
My father stood.
He whispered.
The three Alphas leaned forward, and the whole front bench leaned with them.
"Bostrom," the woman said, not unkindly. "We can't hear you."
He tried again.
I could hear every word he said.
"My daughter has been ill since she was seventeen. She is delicate, and she has been taken advantage of."
"I'm asking for her care."
The Alpha from the islands cupped a hand to his ear.
"Louder, man."
My father's throat worked.
His voice came out as a rasp, and a cough broke it.
Somebody in the back row giggled, and was hushed.
