Chapter 24: The Loudest Night

"I love you, Torin Hask!" I shouted, at the top of my voice, into the whole dark valley.

The stone rang with it.

The hills threw it back, and below us a dog started barking, and then a hundred more.

Torin said nothing.

He had both hands over his face, and his shoulders were shaking, and I could hear that he was laughing and weeping at once.

Then six hundred wolves, asleep on the hillside, woke up and howled.

That was how I told him.

A year later, in the old Bostrom Hall on the shore, my father turned fifty-nine.

It was the loudest supper the hall had ever held.

Every bench was full, and the tables ran out through the doors and down to the sand.

The Ridge had driven down in a convoy that morning, forty trucks, with Torin's sisters carrying casseroles and the children screaming out of the windows.

Bjorn sat at the head of the table in a chair with a cushion, eighty-four years old, telling a story about a seal at the top of his lungs.

My mother stood behind him with the brass bell in her apron pocket.

She rang it every morning at dawn.

Nobody on the Shore had asked her to stop.

I sat at the long table with my hand on Torin's knee.

The mark on my neck had healed to a thin white line, and he put his lips against it whenever he thought nobody was watching.
