Chapter 6: The Wax

Merrick sat his grey horse in front of two hundred wolves and smiled up at the wall.

I saw it from the top of the gate tower, where Caius had carried me against his better judgment.

I had written a single word on the slate, and he had read it and said nothing more.

*Up.*

Torches lit the ridge behind Merrick in a long crooked line.

"Alpha Dunraven," Merrick called, in the reasonable voice he used when a debt came due. "I'm told my daughter Edda is held in your tower."

"She is a guest," Caius said from the parapet.

"She is a prisoner," Merrick said. "And you hold my stepdaughter, who is ill and not responsible for her actions. I've come to take them both home, as the treaty allows."

His eyes found me at the edge of the wall.

He did not look away.

For eighteen years he had put a hand on my head at the table every morning and told the pack I was a good, quiet girl.

I had loved that hand.

"There is no treaty for her," Caius said. "She is my mate."

A murmur ran down the war band, and Merrick's face did not change.

"Then she's a mate who stabbed her own Alpha," he said, mildly. "I have it from three of your men. By Council law she must answer for it."

"She answers to me."

"She answers to the Council," Merrick said. "Give her up, Dunraven, or I take her by force. I have two hundred wolves, and you have a fortress full of men who wanted her three nights ago."

That was true, and Caius heard it, and his shoulders went hard.

I knew what he would do next.

He would go over the wall and kill Merrick in front of the war band.
