Chapter 21: The Challenge
Torin walked up the middle of the hall.
Hawkscar poured in behind him and spread along the walls, and Mirefold's warriors stood between, with their crossbows pointing at the floor.
Nobody raised a bolt.
Nobody told them to.
His eyes found me on the flagstones, and the chain on my wrists, and the red links.
Something went across his face that I will never forget.
He crossed the floor without a word and took the chain in both hands.
The silver hissed against his palms.
He smelled of burning skin and he did not let go.
He pulled, and the iron links tore apart one after another, until the whole thing fell clanking to the stone.
"Your hands," I said.
"Will mend."
He looked at me, only at me.
"You didn't say the words."
"No."
"Rhona."
"Later," I said. "Be angry later. Be glad later."
"I am both."
"Reave," said Osric from the chair, and his voice was still smooth. "You trespass in a hall that is not yours, at the head of an army, over a clerk who stole my book."
