Chapter 23: The Word
I caught him at the Gate.
It was a mile of steep road from the ford.
I ran every step of it in my wet clothes, with a hundred wolves from both packs strung out behind.
My wolf ran beside me.
She was not a shape that night, only a heat at my side, and she never once fell behind.
Torin had made the climb slowly, with his hand pressed to his ribs.
He was at the foot of the steps under the torches, where he had come down to me twenty days before.
He heard us and turned.
His face was bruised on one side.
His shirt hung off one shoulder, and under it the bite scar on mine was a pale crescent I could feel from where I stood.
"You should be in Mirefold," he said. "They've offered you a chair."
"I know."
"It's an Alpha's seat. It's your father's. You're owed it."
"I know that too."
"Then go and take it. Nobody here will stop you."
"Torin."
"I said I wouldn't follow. I meant it."
His voice was rough as a rasp.
"I'm not going to stand on this step and ask you for anything."
"Good," I said. "Then listen."
Hawkscar's warriors had come up behind me, and the Mirefold wolves behind them.
I heard the miller, wheezing, and Torvi's laugh, and the old elder's stick on the stones.
