Chapter 11: Evander's POV

Evander's POV

I had the bell rung for the guard before I reached the stairs.

Maeve had walked out of my court with her head up and not once looked back, and I had stood in the middle of it with every wolf in the capital staring.

I had earned it.

I was halfway down the corridor, with the judges' noise still behind me, when the guard captain came running.

"Majesty. The healer's wing."

He did not need to say more.

I took the east stair three steps at a time.

Maeve stood in the doorway of the little room, very straight, with a lock of white hair in her hand and silver runes glittering above her head.

Her face had no color in it.

I knew the pattern on that lintel.

I had carried her out of a ring in Greywater in my own arms.

"She took Brigid," Maeve said.

"I know."

"She walked into your palace and painted my wall."

"I know. Stand back from the doorway. Don't touch the paint."

"I know what it does," she said, not looking at me. "Better than anyone."

I wanted to put my arms around her.

I did not, because she had told me not to follow her, and I had decided to start obeying.

"Captain," I said. "Seal this wing. Nobody enters. Healer Corrigan stays inside it with six guards."

"I won't be kept," Maeve said.

"You will be kept alive," I said, "for one night. Then I'll hear your terms."

She looked at me for the first time.

It would have been easier if she had screamed.
