Chapter 22: Moon

We did not make it to the bed.

He kicked the bedroom door shut behind us and pinned me to it, and his mouth was on mine before the latch clicked.

The moon came through the window in a long white bar and lay across the floor.

I tore at the buttons of his white shirt.

He tore at the front of my coat, and my blouse, and the clasp of my skirt.

For a minute there was nothing in the room but ripped cloth and ragged breathing.

"Tilda," he said into my neck.

"Yes."

"I can't wait."

"Then don't."

"I want to take my time."

"Lorcan."

He laughed against my collarbone, shaky.

"Both," he said. "I want both. I want it to last, and I want it right now."

I got his shirt off his shoulders.

His skin was burning.

The silver crescent on my shoulder throbbed in time with his heart, and every place his hands touched me felt too warm and too alive.

I pushed him back a step.

"Stop," I said. "Don't touch me."

He froze.

His hands stayed in the air an inch from my skin.

I watched his face.

There was no wall.

No invisible hand held him, and nothing made him stop except what I'd said, and what he was.

His arms shook.

His eyes were enormous, and gold, and fixed on mine.

"You see," I whispered. "I can feel you choosing."

"I'm choosing," he said, strained.
