Chapter 21: Both Awake
Darek carried me out of the Stone Hall, and nobody tried to stop him.
He drove me back over the ridge with my head against his shoulder and his hand around mine on the seat.
Neither of us said anything for an hour.
At my door he lifted me out of the truck and carried me in, and he put me down on my own bed with my boots still on.
He knelt and unlaced them.
"I'm fine," I said.
"You are not."
"I'm empty."
"That's different." He set my boots under the bed. "You're allowed to be."
I pulled him down by the front of his shirt.
He let me, and he stayed above me on his elbows, with his eyes on my face.
"Not tonight," he said.
"Tonight."
"Faye, you just had a bond burned out of your chest."
"I know exactly what I just had burned out of my chest," I said. "I want you to put something else there."
He did not move.
"Say what you want," he said.
"You."
"That's not enough."
"Your mouth on me, slowly. Your hands, and no one else's name in the room." My voice shook. "And I want to hear you say mine."
He shut his eyes briefly.
When he opened them they were amber.
"I can do that."
He undressed me slowly this time.
He took the gray dress off my shoulders and let it fall, and he kissed the line of my collarbone, and the skin above my ribs, and the place where my heart was going.
He took off his own shirt, and I put my palms flat on his chest.
His skin was hot, and his heart was racing under my hand.
