Chapter 23: The Last Party

The pale wolf stood at the north fence and did not move.

Darek sent four wolves around the pasture on foot.

The wolf watched them come, and when they were thirty yards away she turned and ran.

She was fast and thin, and she cleared the ridge without looking back.

The four came home an hour later, empty-handed.

"She was rogue," the beta said, panting. "I smelled the stink of it. She wasn't hunting."

"What was she doing?" Darek said.

"Looking at the house."

I said nothing.

I knew the shape of those shoulders.

That night Darek sat across my kitchen table with a mug of coffee going cold between his hands.

"Ironwood's had no party in three years," he said. "The harvest feast doesn't count, it's work. The pack wants one."

"For what?"

"For you."

I frowned.

"They want to celebrate the Gamma who cleared her name in front of two packs," he said. "And they'd like to see their Alpha look stupid with happiness, which they're sure is coming."

"Darek."

"You organize events," he said. "You haven't organized one that was yours."

I looked at my hands.

For eight years I had set the long tables for people who hurt me.

Nobody had ever asked what I would put on one for myself.

"Fine," I said. "Saturday. All of Ironwood, all of Stillwater's northern ranches, and anyone who stood on that road."

"Done."

"And I'm doing it my way."

"Faye," he said, "I'd never dream of stopping you."

I booked the field behind the hall, and Bess took over the menu with a loud and terrible joy.

On Thursday morning, a Stillwater flatbed truck rolled into the yard with two wolves on the cab.

They unloaded the planks without a word.

They were pale oak and blackened at the edges, cut and sanded smooth, and long enough to seat forty people.
