Chapter 6: Probation

The thread in my chest pulled at the word howl, and I made myself stand still until it let go.

"He can howl at the moon all he likes," I said. "Show me where I'd sit."

Darek's mouth moved at one corner, and he swung up into his truck.

We followed his taillights over the ridge, and an hour later we pulled into a gravel yard full of trucks.

Ironwood's hall was a long log building with a tin roof and a porch.

It smelled of woodsmoke and coffee.

A dozen wolves stood on the steps to look at the Gamma Stillwater had thrown out in front of everyone.

Nobody said a word.

Darek walked me through the front door.

"The desk by the window," he said. "It's yours."

It was a plain metal desk with a phone and a calendar and nothing else.

There was no pin on the blotter and no one watching me.

I put my clipboard down and felt my shoulders come down for the first time in nine days.

"Bess," I said.

"I smell bacon," Bess said, already halfway down the hall. "Somebody point me to a stove."

By ten the next morning, Bess had taken over the kitchen.

By noon, I had learned that Ironwood's Beta did not want a Gamma.

He found me at the desk with a stack of the pack's calendars.

"Stillwater's castoffs," he said, loud enough for the room to hear. "That's what this is."

"Good morning to you too," I said.

"We don't need a party planner."

"You have a treaty meeting with the northern packs on Friday," I said. "It's double-booked with your own harvest feast, and neither of them has a cook."

He opened his mouth and shut it.

"Your cook is down the hall," I said. "Her name is Bess. Move the feast to Saturday and I'll tell the northern packs it was your idea."
