Chapter 15: The Front Bench

Torin's POV

I walked into the square at noon with a palm that still felt her hand on it.

Vane was awake. He paced under my ribs and did not speak, but he was not wild.

He had been that way since the porch, still, and waiting.

Two hundred people stood in front of the pack Stone.

My father stood on the step of the Council Hall with his cane and his charcoal overcoat, and a paper in his other hand.

Cecily's father stood a pace behind him.

Cecily, in white, stood on the other side.

I stopped at the foot of the steps.

Hugh stopped beside me. Behind us, at the very back of the square, I did not look to see if a woman in her mother's cardigan stood against the wall.

I had asked her to stay at the lake. I knew she would not.

"My son," my father said, in the voice he used for funerals. "Thank you for coming. It's a hard thing to hear this in public. I would have spared you."

"You called the pack," I said. "Read it."

"Gladly."

He unfolded the paper.

"The Alpha of Cedar Hollow has not held a shift in more than three weeks. By his own mouth, in this square, he has said so. He rejected the Luna the Goddess gave him on the word of a false report, and then he confessed to the pack that he was fooled."

He let a breath pass.

"A wolf who cannot be trusted with his mate cannot be trusted with two hundred."

"That's not what I said," I said.

"It is what everyone heard."

A murmur went around. Not all of it was against me. Not all of it was for.

I looked at my father's right hand, which gripped the cane head so hard the knuckles stood out.
