Chapter 21: The Glass Wall

I knocked on the carved door at two in the morning, and it opened before my knuckles left the wood.

Corbin stood there in a pair of dark trousers, with his chest bare and his bandage fresh.

He had not slept.

His eyes went gold the moment he saw me, and his hand closed on the frame so hard the wood creaked.

"Cassandra," he said.

"Don't talk."

I was wearing the hotel's white robe and nothing under it.

I looked at the floor between us.

Three steps of pale oak.

I took the first one.

He did not move.

I took the second.

His breath came harder, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Three steps," he said, low. "You made the rule."

"I did."

"You're breaking it."

"I'm the only one who's allowed to." I took the third step, and my robe brushed his bare skin. "Say it again."

"Say what?"

"Three steps, Corbin. Say it the way you said it to me four years ago, when you didn't want me to touch you."

His face changed.

"I never said that."

"You didn't have to." I put my palm flat on his chest. "You said it with your back every night."

His heart slammed under my hand.

"I'm not saying it now," he said roughly. "I'm not saying anything. Tell me what you want."

I pulled him into my room by his belt.

He came without a sound, and he kicked the carved door shut behind him.

The lights were off, and the rain had started again.

The whole west wall of my room was glass, and beyond it the sea moved black and silver in the dark.

I walked him back across the floor until his shoulders met the cold pane.

"Hands on the glass," I said.

He lifted them.

He put them flat on the window on either side of his head, and he stayed that way, and his arms shook.

I untied my robe and let it fall.

Corbin made a sound low in his throat.

He had seen me naked a thousand times, and he looked at me as if he had never seen me at all, because four years ago he had never looked.

"Look at me," I said.

"I am."

"Not at my body. At me."

His eyes came up to my face, gold and wild and wet.

"There," I said. "That's what I wanted for four years."

I kissed him.

He took it with a groan, and his mouth opened under mine, hungry and shaking, and he kept his hands on the glass.
