Chapter 23: The Mating

The full moon rose over the Hill of Black Stone, huge and white.

I stood on the roof of the old keep with the wind pulling at my dress.

Below me the Moon Court was dark and quiet.

Everyone had gone to bed, because my mother had made a point of telling them to.

Evander came up the roof stair behind me.

He stopped at the top, a few paces away, and did not come closer.

"You said you'd ask," I said.

"I did."

"Then ask."

He drew a slow breath.

I saw his hands shaking at his sides.

"Linnea of the Moon," he said. "I have a wolf who has known you since the first night. He's been howling for nine years, and he stopped when you stood up at that block."

"I remember."

"I'm his, and I'm yours, and I'm asking nothing of you but this. Will you choose me?"

He did not get on his knees.

He stood on his feet in front of me with his chin up, and he held out his open hands.

I looked at them.

I thought of the knife practice in the yard, and the cuffs, and the crack of the block under my palm.

I thought of every man who had ever told me what I was.

None of them had asked.

"You knew what I was for days, and you didn't tell me," I said.

"No."

"You knelt on a road with your throat bare, and you waited on a ridge when everything in you wanted to burn a hall."

"Yes."

"I haven't forgiven the letter."

"I know."

"I'm going to forgive it a little at a time," I said. "For a long time. Every year. I'm going to throw it at you when we fight, and you will take it."
