Chapter 15: What Torin Signed

Three hundred heads turned from me to Torin.

He stood at the foot of the dais with his hands at his sides.

For the first time in my life I saw him look afraid of a room.

"What did you sign?" I asked.

"Orla."

"What did you sign in the dark?"

Winifred opened her folder and took out a single sheet of heavy cream paper.

She held it up so the nearest rows could see the seals.

"The Compact of Kensington and Lowell," she said. "Signed by my son the night before your wedding, in my study, by candle."

"I know the Compact," I said. "I signed one too."

"You signed the woman's half. This is the Alpha's half."

She passed it to the Elder, who read it and set it down.

"Clause nine," Winifred said. "Shall I?"

"Read it," I said.

The Elder cleared his throat. His voice was thin.

"If the Luna bears no child within four years of the marriage, the Alpha may name another in her place."

He swallowed.

"The first Luna shall go from the tower."

The Hall did not make a sound.

Four years, I thought.

Four years to the night since my wedding.

"That's why she named Camille on our anniversary," I said. "It wasn't an insult. It was a deadline."

"It was the law," Winifred said. "Which my son agreed to. Which my son read."
