Chapter 7: No Touching, Alpha

"Lock the door," Torin said.

"This is my house."

"Then lock your house."

He stepped off the porch into the rain and started pulling at his shirt.

I did not lock the door.

I went to the back of the kitchen where my mother had always kept her tools, and I took down the long garden fork, the one with the iron tines and the splintered handle.

When I came out, the first rogue was already coming up the drive.

It was gaunt, and its fur hung in patches, and it ran low with its jaw open.

Torin shifted.

I had been married to him for four years, and I had never watched him do it.

His back bowed, and his bones cracked, and then there was a black wolf standing where the man had been, huge and wet and silver-eyed.

The rogue hit him at full speed.

They went over together in the mud, and the sound they made was something I felt in my teeth.

A second rogue came around the corner of the house, and I saw it too late.

It came straight for me.

I did not scream. I swung the fork.

The tines caught it across the muzzle and tore a line of red, and it yelped and reeled back and came on again.

I got the fork up in front of me with both hands.

"Get back," I said. "Get back, get back."

I wasn't sure which of us I was talking to.

The rogue crouched to spring.

From behind it the black wolf came out of the dark, shoulder first, and hit it so hard it flew into the fence.

The rogue got up and the wolf was on it.

I saw his jaws open over its throat.

I saw what he meant to do.

His whole body was shaking with it, and the silver eyes were blind.

"Stop," I said.

I did not say it loudly.
