Chapter 10: The Yellow Note
The dean had the library footage on her screen by noon.
She had called the head of security herself, and she had not asked me to wait outside.
Casper stood beside me in her office with his camera bag over his shoulder.
"Before you watch," the dean said, "I owe you a correction."
She folded her hands on the desk.
"Yesterday I told you I could not discipline Ms. DeCourcy. I relied on the letter her mother gave me. This morning I called the neurologist who signed it."
"And?" I said.
"He retired six years ago. His former practice kept the file." The dean opened her legal pad. "The diagnosis was real. She was treated from fourteen to sixteen. She was discharged at sixteen with no episodes for a full year."
Casper let out a low whistle.
"Discharged means cured?" I asked.
"It means her condition is closed," the dean said. "The letter her mother showed me was a copy of the original diagnosis. Nobody reopened it."
"So she's had no sleep disorder for five years."
"According to her own doctor's file," the dean said, "yes."
I sat down in the chair across from her desk because my knees decided for me.
"Now," the dean said. "The library."
She turned her monitor.
The camera looked down from the ceiling over the row of computer terminals.
It was 8:29 p.m. by the time stamp.
A figure in a gray hood walked in and sat at terminal fourteen.
She pushed the hood back.
It was Kelsey, and she was moving fast and wide awake.
