Chapter 20: Why She Did It
The recording played to the end.
Nobody in the conference room spoke while Saskia's gray cardigan walked out of the frame.
The Larkfield man stopped the video and folded his hands.
"Ms. Wozniak," he said.
"That's edited," Saskia said at once. "You've heard what they said about the clips. Anyone can fake a face."
"The campus IT office certified these files last night," the woman with the legal pad said. She did not look up. "I've read the letter."
"The lounge file isn't on that letter!"
"It has the same sensor and the same chain of custody," the man said. "It also has the recovery code, which I can check against your phone. Would you like to show it to me?"
Saskia's hand went to her purse.
She stopped.
"No," she said.
"That's what I thought."
He opened a manila folder in front of him.
"The Dean of Students sent me this morning's package," he said. "A Bursar's statement. A hundred and twelve text messages from a contact called M. Two voicemails. A door log from the fourth-floor stairwell."
"I didn't send those messages."
"The voicemails are in your voice."
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out of it.
"Four attacks," the man said. "Four payments. A friend of four years. A stolen password and a sabotaged file in the middle of the night, to keep her out of this very room."
He looked at her over the folder.
"I have hired three hundred designers in twenty years," he said. "I can teach most things. I cannot teach someone not to do this."
