Chapter 11: Gran's Hands

I didn't want to show Gran.

Megan said I had to.

"If it were my grandmother," she said in the truck, "I'd want to know what they were planning to do to me."

"It is your grandmother's son's plan."

"I know. That's why."

Gran was at the kitchen table snapping beans when we came in.

I put Megan's phone in front of her.

She got her reading glasses out of her apron pocket.

She read it slowly.

if the old lady balks at the deed we go the other way.

one bad eval and she can't sign anything.

tell bev it's a checkup for the wedding.

She took off her glasses.

She folded them and put them back in her pocket.

"He did tell me that," she said. "In June. He said brides' families get checkups before weddings now. For the insurance."

"Gran."

"I said I'd go after the harvest. I said I didn't have time to sit in a waiting room." She stared at the beans. "I almost went. He was going to drive me."

Her voice didn't shake.

That was worse.

She stood up, slowly, with one hand on the table.

She went upstairs.

I heard her closet door.

When she came down ten minutes later, she was wearing her navy church dress, her good shoes, and lipstick.

"Get the truck," she said.

"Where are we going?"

"I'm going to have a checkup."

Shane's brokerage is on the second floor of a brick building on Front Street, across from the bay.

Gran went up the stairs in front of me without touching the rail.

It was two in the afternoon.

Six desks, all full.

Through the glass wall of the conference room, I could see Shane in a blue suit.

He was smiling at a man in golf clothes with a stack of brochures.

Gran walked straight past the receptionist.
