Chapter 27: Harvest Dinner
I drove Kelsey to her mother's house that night.
Her mother opened the door in her bathrobe and pulled her inside without a word to me.
I didn't need one.
On Monday the prosecutor called.
Kelsey had come in with her mother and the yearbook, and said she'd tell the rest in front of him or not at all.
"Then I'll be on your lawn September first," the prosecutor said. "With two deputies. We'll see who shows up."
That gave us sixteen days.
Megan had the idea for the dinner.
"Three hundred seats in the barn," she said. "A hundred dollars a plate. Everything from the farm. You cook, I sell."
"Nobody pays a hundred dollars for pie."
"They will for your pie. With the story attached."
She posted it on Tuesday morning.
It sold out by Tuesday night.
Saturday, August twenty-eighth, the barn was full.
Long tables end to end under the string lights we'd taken down after the wedding.
The same lights.
Megan had made me put them back up.
"They're good lights," she said. "They didn't do anything wrong."
