Chapter 30: A Real Date
I let him stand there for a second.
"Saturday," I said. "Seven o'clock. Come to the front door."
"Not the stand?"
"Not the stand. Not the shed. Not the cooler. The front door, like a person."
"Like a person," he said, grinning, and went back down the hill with a bounce in his step.
Megan had been listening from the screen door the whole time.
So had Gran.
By Saturday, the two of them were out of control.
Megan did my hair at the kitchen table in a loose braid with little pieces left down.
"You're overthinking it," I said.
"You're underthinking it. This is a date. You've never been on a date with him. You've only been on emergencies."
Gran sat in her chair by the window with her new walker parked beside it.
She'd picked out my dress.
The green one, from the hotel ballroom.
"It's lucky," she said.
"Nothing lucky happened in it. Gran collapsed."
"And I'm fine. And that man resigned. That's two lucky things."
At seven o'clock exactly, there was a knock on the front door.
