Chapter 32: Under the Trees
I sat down across from her.
She slid the card halfway across the oilcloth.
Then she kept two fingers on it.
"Not yet," she said.
"Gran. You can't show a person a card and say not yet."
"I raised you. I can do what I like." She tapped it once. "This goes with my gift. You read it at the reception, when I hand it over. Not one minute before."
I knew what the gift was.
I'd known for a year.
"You're sure?" I said.
"I've been sure since 1961," she said. "Make the coffee."
I carried that card in my apron pocket for three weeks.
I didn't open it.
The wedding was Saturday, July twenty-fourth, at four o'clock, under the trees.
Megan was my maid of honor.
She wore a green dress she picked out herself and a pair of white sneakers she refused to take off.
"I'm on my feet twelve hours a shift," she said. "I'm not doing heels for anybody. Not even you."
The label on the jam said JILTED JAM. TORRANCE CHERRY FARM. LIBBY AND MEGAN.
She did my hair at the kitchen table.
