Chapter 13: Paragraph Twelve
The first line was only the beginning.
I read the rest aloud, because the trustee was watching me and my voice was the only thing in the kitchen still working.
"A woman who keeps every term of her contract is an employee."
"Employees do not win houses."
"A woman who breaks the contract for him is the only partner worth the house."
"Trustee, judge by what she breaks."
I stopped there.
Below the typing were four lines of blue ink, in a hand that leaned hard to the right.
"Those are for him," the trustee said.
I slid the page across the table.
Caspar read the ink once, silently, and then he read it again out loud, in a flat voice that didn't sound like his.
"I could not make you come home, Caspar. So I made it cost you something."
"I hope she was worth the price."
He set the page down very carefully.
