Chapter 17: Winter Dinner
Clive had taken the head of the table again.
He had brought a new blazer for the occasion, with the crest stitched twice as big.
The trustee sat at the far end with her legal pad.
Cressida sat on her father's right, in black, with her hands in her lap and her eyes on the tablecloth.
Fourteen Kells filled the rest of the chairs.
I walked in with Caspar's hand in mine.
I had on the dark blue dress Lucy had dragged me to buy and my navy oilskin over it, because I would not leave the jacket in a closet.
Clive stood and tapped his glass.
"A toast," he said. "To the first dinner of the year at which everyone knows exactly who is being paid."
Nobody laughed.
A few of them looked at their plates.
Clive sat down looking pleased.
I stayed on my feet.
"Thank you, Clive," I said. "I have something to read to the table."
